HPV is felt to be the cause of 25 percent of oral cancers in the US, but just as we have not segregated men and women to different continents to reduce cervical cancer, there are a few simple measures that can lower risk in this case as well. We advice women to get regular Pap smears, and likewise we should remind men and women alike to have regular dental checkups. Most dentists routinely screen for oral cancer, and oral cancers attributed to HPV have a higher cure rate than those caused by tobacco and alcohol. In addition, a diet high in fruits and veges accelerates clearance of the virus, leaving less time for it to cause the inflammation that can lead to cancer. Light the candles and bring strawberries!
