Listen / Download

JamesPod #52 - February 11, 2007

On this show, a storytelling clip from Bruce Murray's skydiving show, free phone voice mail services, your letters and much more.

James vows to do an audio podcast every week.

James is now concentrating on video podcasting, Aiden is now going to preschool.

The cold snap in Saskatchewan has been going on for a long time.

Podcaster Bruce Murray is well known for a pair of podcasts he did 18 months ago on his first time jumping out of a 'perfectly good airplane.'

We hear a clip of Bruce telling us about getting introduced to his podcasting instructor, whose appearance gave Bruce little confidence.

Clip from the Zedcast: Ralph the instructor gets introduced to Bruce.

James tells his story about hanging off a window washer rig on the side of a skyscraper.

The Fast Food News Podcast will be released as a video podcast in three test episodes by the end of February, 2007. (see JamesWhittingham.com)

The hosts of the Broca's Area podcast submit an audio file from a KFC drive-thru. Dave complains about the enormous taxes on KFC meals. His $28 meal o' chicken actually cost $33 (Canadian). Iza is charged the ethnic tax because she's a Frenchy.

Free feedback phone lines from K7.net. Mark Blevis from the Canadian Podcast Buffet tells James about it. We listen to a clip from the CPB regarding James not knowing about the free service. You have to get one voice message in any 30 day period. You can send faxes as well.

James's listener comment line:
Tel/Fax: (206) 350-0604

Listener comment from someone who has inside information on Bruce Murray in regard to the MySpace friend's incident.

Letters: James's Mail Sac contains two letters.

'Kim' writes that she liked the James and Kevin Show, s/he came across the show on YouTube.

Moni asks about existentialism and the key to happiness. James tells her to find a religion and stop reading books.

Scott turns forty and the staff at a restaurant sings happy birthday to him.

Jack thinks James's has 'type' when it comes to being attracted to women.

Access rolls out home phone service today

Sounds good, 25 dollars a month for everything when you bundle with internet and cable tv.

I'm sick of paying 8 bucks a month for voice mail and god knows how much for call and name display, probably another 8 bucks.  And SaskTel charges an extra two dollars on top of that for call display on your TV with Max.  It's free everywhere else.  It's like charging an outrageous amount for name display, and then charging you extra for using their call display box.

Then there's cheap long distance 2 to 2.5 cents per minute, you can't beat that.  SaskTel Max sucks.  The volume varies from channel to channel, the on demand movies are sometimes out of sync and there's service interruptions almost every day.  It chokes and hiccups all the time.  Access digital has better picture quality.

Disclaimer and notes: I worked for Access for a few years in the mid 90s. I've been using SaskTel Max since October. The compression of the digital video is so extreme, it looks like YouTube sometimes. More on how SaskTel Max sucks in a future, more detailed post.

CTV NewsNet: Castro's Dead?

I was minding my own business, watching  a few minutes of CTV NewsNet this afternoon when they ran a wrong stinger, or transition between stories.

They ran about 3 or 4 seconds of what must have been an element they have on hand if Fidel Castro dies.

The visual was of Fidel with the text Fidel Castro 1926 to 2007.  But then they cut back to a smiling and slightly embarrassed anchor who continued on with another story.

I quickly scanned the news channels and web sites looking to see if he died.  Nothing.

Oops.

Good thing NewsNet isn't broadcast in Miami.
